I turned to the Soundtrack Channel just now to see a song by this guy called Terence Jay. The song's called "one blood". You can see it on youtube. I wasnt actually listening to it but the music started sounding so familiar that i turned up the volume. Then it struck me that it was a RIP OFF of Dire Straits' brothers in arms, which is also there at youtube. The guitar was so mark knopfler (i have never failed to notice that signature guitar style so far).

n its really pathetic how ppl comment on youtube about how great n wonderful this song is. more over its just disgusting how he cud actually do this. and to say the least, release the song as a total rip off. Unless someone come to me with solid proof that MK or the record company gave up the rights for him to rip off the song, or MK is getting a hefty royalty, i'd say Terence Jay is a fake-ass and a disgrace to the music industry.

i went to the dhiraagu office/place at majeedhee magu today to pay my bills. i hav to say its the best customer service i got so far at any place in male. the girl at the counter was really polite and explained anything i asked quite well. there were a couple of glitches with the Bank of Maldives card machines but she handled the situation smoothly. a couple of bad points though. she had no name tag nor was there a pen to fill up the customer feedback form. otherwise i cud have praised her alot. in case anyone at dhiraagu reads this and wants to praise her, she's the fair girl with a buruga.

i was riding along boduthakurufaanu magu at around 3pm today when i heard someone shouting near faashanaa building. seems the guy had caught one youngster by the shirt and was shouting to stop the other. probably his accomplice. looked quite like a street bum, both of them. some guys were running after him. maybe the two youngsters were upto some mischief. theft perhaps.. who knows.. shouldnt accuse without knowing. now the weird part. the police head quarters was right next to that building and there were a few cops on the road doing nothing but "watching the show". One cop was showing the other with a cheesy smile the culprit who ran off. ummm..so where is the service and protection when civilians have to run after the thugs while the officers stay back enjoying the show.

i was recently helping out someone in maths with her 2nd term exams when i came across some weird stuff.

some explanations in the notes made no sense. there were just dead wrong (eg. simultaneous eqns were solved graphically just by using only one of the equations and completely ignoring the 2nd one. i wonder why they are called simultaneous equations then)

questions attempted incorrectly were also marked correct (not just one. almost all of it)

most of the explanations were hard to follow (maybe i am getting rusty upstairs..hehe)

anyways i asked her and a few others some questions and heres what i gathered.

the teachers dont really know how to respond to questions (no wonder everyones taking tuition thesedays)

though it is an english medium school, it seems that some teachers were conducting classes in dhivehi (and its not islam or dhivehi) with the excuse that they find it hard to explain in english

students were free to ask questions in dhivehi (i guess thats why the english standard of the current students are so bad)

there was one class where a teacher conducted the lesson in hindi (now this is nice. courtesy kasauti everyone now understands hindi)

i'v seen the OL and AL school teaching standards deteriorate cos i'v been helping out students since 1996. As for Diploma and Advanced Diploma, lets not go there. its a whole lot worse. i wonder when somebody is going to take some real action.

its fun to wonder how people go around behind your back with all their self righteous comments and opinions about you. you could be really amazed at how they define you and degrade you. they base all their arguments on prejudice rather than reality. building judgements based on self inflicted fear or any other insecurities. maybe all it takes is a slight misjudgement to sparkle their flame. n they sit down and wonder what else to add to their pot of hatred. and sooner or later the pot fills up... and it does fill up rather quick (use a cauldron stupid, u cud add more to that).... ahaa. so now they gotta nice pot of pins, needles, voodoo dolls, daggers, stones (and even guillotines?.. who knows). but they end up emptying the pot not on me.. but on someone close to me. oh so courageous. bringing the house down on someone who has no clue whats going on. n over and over again this has been the case. be it now be it back then. n i'm starting to get weiry of this. whatever you got against me, just say it to my face. after all u had the guts to accuse me behind my back. n you took ur time to cook up the hatred. n even so ever politely place me next to the devil. and more over, stretch facts beyond its limits. all because of what you think or what one told you. ever wondered what the real story was?

a little piece of advice for all of u who organize weddings or any other event that involves flowers. stay away from cycus. those guys suck big time. back when i got married there was cycus and cactus. i went to cycus (cos a friend of dads was involved there), ordered everything well ahead, and they were pretty assuring. gave a nice warm cozy feeling that we were doing the right thing. haha. it was just an act. the guys cudnt deliver on time. the reception started at 8.30 n they were still hanging vines n stuff even by 9. n the weird part is when they cant deliver on time, this nasif stops answering his phone.

anyways wats done is done. n then my bro recently started planning his wedding. i told him to stay well away from cycus. but then he needed vines badly and approached cycus. i dunno how on earth he came to the conclusion that those guys are reliable. anyways they were the same assuring people as before. told my bro to come collect the vines at 2pm on the day of the wedding. at 2 they said to come at 2.15 cos its at the airport. at 2.15 it was come back later. n when "later" it was "we r still at it". and even later it was "it will be here at 5.30". at 5.30 it was "we hav no idea when it wud be here but it will be here". by 6 he got frustrated n gave them a piece of his mind.

so i said it once n i say it again. if u want ur wedding decorations to go smoothly forget about cycus. heres a better alternative. go for Gift World. its near Lemon Grass. they deliver on time and they give no nonsense. if they arnt certain something would reach Male on time they dont go around saying they can do it. they simply tell the truth.

Dhivehi as a subject is boring?

was watching tv a couple of nights back when i saw this woman, man and shakeebbe debating whether maldivian students have lots interest in the subject dhivehi or not. the arguments werent going that well with each trying to fend for their own and resulting in conflicting answers. for instance it seems that the weak dhivehi standard in school leavers is not the schools fault but rather the fault of news papers who publish in bad dhivehi. but arnt school leavers who eventually go on to publish these articles. so where is the root of the problem then?

and the other complains that the school cant help it cos there are only 4 half hour dhivehi sessions a week and thats not enough time. but when spanned over 3 years it seems more than enough for me. after all they go on babbling the same stuff grade over grade.

so whats the problem. i think its a problem with the language itself. the language isnt rich enough for one to express anything educational/technical beyond the borders of maldives. ofcourse its "rich enough" to have all sorts of names for various stages of coconut development. seems some have noticed this. but who cares about mumbling the various stages of a coconut's life cycle in the long run. so whats the use of a language that cant keep up with the rapid dynamics of this world. it would naturally be easier for one to opt for a better alternative for expression.

True enemy or false friend

true friends, friends and fakers. how do one distinguish them. wouldnt it be nice to know. its not everyday that u get the opportunity to catagorize them. but once in a while the opportunity presents itself. and you get to know whos in for the long run and whos "in for the money".

for instance how many of your friends inquire about ur health when they find out that ur ill. along similar lines, how many of them inquire about your parents or relatives when their health is seriously deteriorated or when they pass away. and how many of them inquire just as a "call of duty" rather than sincerity. distress seems to be a way to identify whos really your friend from those who act as one for some personal gain. the idea never struck me, be it my stupidity or ignorance until i was in a chat conversation yesterday with a friend whos mother was in intensive care. supposedly he seem to have viewed those who inquired about her in a manner better than the few (or rather one according to him) who conveniently forgot to inquire about her.

so now why all the blabbering. i'm not feeling well. been stuck at home for two days n its driving me nuts. i guess i ran out of things to do (you can see multiple blog entries today. a sign of boredom). or maybe it struck me that now might be a good time to find out whos takes me for who i am rather than what i am (the latter is something that i'v been quite fed up with over the years). supposedly it seems to be working quite well. the ones i thought were true seems to remain true n the asses who were in for their own good... well.. better not say anything about them.. or maybe i would one day when the time is right.

OpenBSD/PF lacks proper documentation...WTF??

Aha. A pathetic blow on the operating system that boasts so much about security and code correctness. Apparently it seems Theo forgot about documentation. or so does the managing director of mesco think. No documentation, no manuals, wtf??? Hows one ever gonna wade thru the system.

and thats not all. seems him & co. thinks openbsd systems are non-standard as well. oh oh. now thats gonna hurt Theo. what have u been doing for the past decade or so. or better yet why the hell did those universities, government institutes, and ISPs decided to go ahead with OpenBSD. hmm. maybe cos their CIO or IT manager or Sys Admin sux. or maybe they themselves know not to differenciate good and bad technology. or maybe the companies are just no good losers. So i guess adobe's a pretty big loser then. seems a number of their firewalls are OpenBSD based. n what about DARPA. lets no go there.. i dont want two men in black suits to come knocking on my door and saying "please come with us".

so whats a standard? a click click drag drag? a fancy price tag? or something in a weird casing with knobs that u cant quite play around with? n y were no documentation was included in their website. maybe some dunno the meaning of manuals and FAQs. what about books then?. maybe the publishers didnt want to publish anything non-standard. so i guess Michael Lucas, Jacek Artymiak and Jem Matzan wud have paid the publishers a hefty sum to get their work published.

The ROL tech team recently sent an email containing the following to their customers

ROL Mail Server Change Notice

Dear Customer,

We would like to bring to your kind notice that on Friday - 31th March 2006, we would be changing the servers used for distribution of ROL Email Service. A few important aspects regarding this change are listed below:

Email username will change to include the full email address (eg: If you use the username "username" to check emails, after the server change, the username will be username@focusinfocom.com.mv, which is the same as the full email address).
All the passwords will be reset and they will be the same as the first part username (without the @rol.net.mv part). This reset is necessary because it is not possible to move existing passwords.
This will affect @rol.net.mv email accounts and all the other domains as well. Such as @focusinfocom.com.mv, @pcb.gov.mv, and so on. Usernames will change for those domains in the same way.
After the change, some users will still have unread emails on the old server. They must retrieve them by changing the POP server address to "prepop.rol.net.mv" and they should again change it back to standard "pop.rol.net.mv" after having downloaded the emails on the old server. This additional step the customers have to take is also unavoidable due to the nature of this change.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to your operations.

My bike gave up on me yesterday. maybe cos i was too lazy to fill up the fuel tank. I had to go to one of these petrol stations with a bottle. I noticed that they wanted to note down my ID card number. For obvious reasons i guess.. The Great Packet Journey

i was recently told by a sys admin that they were unable to send emails to certain domains (avasmail.com.mv and dhinet.net.mv) via their ISPs smtp server (smtp.rol.net.mv). The error message in the "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" was something like this.

like about 24 hrs after they reported the problem they received a response saying that since the ISP changed the IP address of their new mail server, it would take about two days for the change to announce itself worldwide on the MX record entries and reverse DNS entries.

(what the hell??)

so i'm wondering like whether they decided to send a legion of packets all over the world announcing their change in DNS entries. don't they understand how DNS works. maybe they are stuck at an ancient era, still using the flat namespace. anyways we'll have to wait until the missionary packets return from their great worldwide journey before we see any bright horizons.

It seems that sometimes i compare whats happening around me with movies...just out of boredom..hehe. Lately i'v been drawing parallels with the movie "Meet Joe Black". Those of you who'v seen the movie wud remember Brad Pitt following around Anthony Hopkins like almost everywhere he goes. Whats his motive? for the shallow minded, he was just there to sleep with Hopikin's daughter n kill Hopkin... well actually there is more..but lets leave that to the critics (i'm no movie critic by any means). Anyways I noticed a guy here, always following around my boss. yes, anywhere he goes!!! just like Brad Pitt (not his looks, just the way he follows around..hehe). Though my boss can be considered a media tycoon, he's got no daughter. so I wonder what 'joe black' is after.. there r a couple of conclusions i can draw but its best not to say it. Sometime back i met a well renowned System Engineer, and as it had been with all other great people that i meet, i thought i'd learn a bit or two from him. I guess i'll share what i learnt from him...

From what i figured, he basically catagorized his tasks.... the basic catagories were, Bandwidth Control, Remote Access, Encryption, and Networking Concepts... maybe there were more... had i been more attentive, i guess i could have learnt alot more.

Anyways enough talk... here's what i learnt from him..

Bandwidth Control
iSite, the hospitality gateway solution from IKUSI is always there for the rescue... its something u cant live without.. from what i gathered, its supposed to help control per user bandwidth no matter what ur network architecture is... SOHO or even the large scale enterprise networks.... all thesedays i was under the impression that it was a hospitality gateway solution and not a specialized bandwidth control tool.. guess i should learn to do my homework better.

Remote Access
It seems pcAnywhere is the choice for all ur remote access needs. I personally havent tried one cos I havent found a version that runs on the BSDs and Windows alike....(yes i use windows..remember I am a *n?x newbie...intimidated by unknown fears of a total migration). I thought about VNC once, but he always mentioned pcAnywhere... so i guess its the better choice.

Encryption
I'm a real newbie when it comes to data encryption and encrypted data storage. I was told that PGP does a really good job. Seems u cud use it to encrypt ur documents as well as massive storage media encryption. Wow...way in over my head... anyways a fellow admin had earlier mentioned something with a similar name, GPG, though he didnt brag about it much.. just left me to explore it.. never really told me its use either... During the time spent with the System Engineer i mumbled something about GPG... the impression i got was that its probably a misspell...it seems PGP was obviously the better choice.

Networking Concepts
Me being the newbie was quite curious about certain jargons.. things such as VPN, VLAN, Backplane Switching, Ethernets, Routing, n-PDU, etc... guess I learnt alot.. too bad i only remember the following 5 important points.

VPNs are basically VLANs...not much difference... atleast nothing a newbie shud be worried about
You dont need VLAN aware switches to create VLANs.. all u need is an end gateway that understood the VLAN "language". (what does that mean...anyone?)
Backplane Switching is the bandwidth of the backbone interconnecting the switches.
When Ethernet packets are sent from one switch to another, its called routing
Ethernet is the IP network that u have in SOHOs

So where was I when the lecturers talked about all this? I guess thats the danger of skipping class.

failure. a wicked word. makes u wonder where u went wrong. what u failed to see. why u failed to notice. y u didnt act in time. or more like why cudnt u act. maybe its cos u were too certain about the fundamentals. the axioms that later proved to be fallacies. the foundations based on which u created your judgement. when the pure essence of your reasoning is cracked by the unstable pillars upon which it stands, where do u turn to. is there anywhere to turn to? or are u scorned to watch it wither away?

and it maybe hard to accept it. the blow maybe too strong to withstand. especially when its the first time u failed in something that matters not only to u. more specifically when its too hard to accept the fact that u cud ever fail like that.

no matter how bitter the truth maybe its time to face it. u made a mess trying to set things right. u gotta admit it. questions are there, like how? and why? but the fact remains that u failed. n failed miserably. u as a mentor, a friend, someone to lean on, or someone even more than that was just a total failure.
